Gradual Collagen Restoration, Directed by a Physician

Sculptra® is an injectable treatment designed to stimulate your body’s natural collagen production over time. Rather than providing immediate volume like traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, Sculptra® works gradually beneath the surface to improve skin structure and restore facial fullness in a more progressive, subtle way.

At the practice of Gwynn Patterson, M.D., FACOG, treatment planning is physician-directed and based on a detailed evaluation of facial anatomy, volume loss, and long-term aesthetic goals. Sculptra® is often selected when the goal is structural improvement rather than short-term correction alone.

What Areas Can Sculptra® Treat?

Sculptra® is typically used in areas where volume loss is more diffuse rather than sharply defined. Rather than targeting a single wrinkle or fold, it is used to restore broader structural support across the face.
It is most commonly used in the cheeks and midface, where gradual volume loss can lead to flattening or sagging over time. The temples are another area where Sculptra® can help restore subtle fullness and improve overall facial balance.
It may also be used along the jawline to address softening of definition, as well as in areas of general facial hollowing associated with aging.
Because of how Sculptra® works within the skin, it is generally not used for fine lines or lip enhancement, where more precise hyaluronic acid fillers are typically more appropriate.

Why Sculptra® Is Used

Sculptra® is often selected for patients who are not looking for immediate or dramatic change, but instead want a more gradual and longer-term improvement in facial structure.
Its primary advantage is that it stimulates your body’s natural collagen production. Rather than placing volume directly under the skin, it encourages the skin to rebuild its own support over time.
This leads to results that develop progressively, often appearing more subtle and natural as they evolve. Instead of a noticeable “after” moment, changes tend to build gradually over a series of treatments.
Because the results are tied to collagen remodeling, they may also last longer than many traditional fillers in appropriate patients.
Sculptra® is also well-suited for treating larger areas of volume loss. It allows for broader structural improvement, helping to enhance skin thickness and support rather than focusing only on surface-level correction.

After treatment:

After treatment, it’s common to notice some mild swelling, tenderness, or a feeling of fullness in the treated areas. In some cases, small bumps can be felt under the skin early on, but these typically resolve as the product settles.

Because Sculptra® works by stimulating collagen rather than adding immediate volume, changes develop gradually. Improvement occurs over time as your body builds new structural support beneath the skin, rather than immediately after the appointment.

You will also be given simple post-treatment instructions, including massage techniques to help distribute the product evenly during the early phase of collagen stimulation.

How Sculptra® Differs from Traditional Fillers

Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which provide immediate volume by physically filling space beneath the skin, Sculptra® works by stimulating your body’s own collagen production.
Because of this, the results tend to develop more gradually and appear more natural over time. Rather than creating an immediate change, Sculptra® improves the underlying structure of the skin, which can lead to better overall skin quality and thickness.
It also shifts the approach to treatment. Instead of relying on repeated high-volume filler sessions to maintain results, Sculptra® is often used as part of a longer-term strategy focused on rebuilding and supporting the skin itself.
For that reason, it is typically not viewed as a one-time correction, but as a treatment that works progressively over a series of sessions.

How Long Do Results Last?

With Sculptra®, results typically last up to about two years for many patients, and in some cases longer depending on the individual.

Unlike traditional fillers, Sculptra® does not simply add volume. It stimulates your body’s natural collagen production, and as that collagen is gradually broken down over time, results fade more slowly.

Is Sculptra® Right for You?

Sculptra® may be a good option if you’re noticing more generalized volume loss rather than a single line or crease that needs to be corrected.
It’s typically chosen by patients who are comfortable with a gradual approach and prefer results that develop over time rather than immediately after treatment. Instead of focusing on quick volume, the goal is to improve overall facial support and skin quality in a way that looks more natural as it evolves.
A consultation with Gwynn Patterson, M.D., FACOG helps determine whether Sculptra® or a different type of dermal filler is the better fit based on your anatomy and treatment goals.
